Applications of Cognitive Radio Networks: Recent Advances and Future Directions

Call for Papers

The demand of spectrum increased tremendously due to the recent advancements in wireless communication technology. This dramatic requirement of spectrum has challenged the current spectrum licensing system and inspired authorities to legalize opportunistic spectrum access. Recently, many authorities, researchers, and hardware manufacturers are working to solve this virtual scarcity issue. Cognitive radio (CR) networks are suitable in this mitigation, by utilizing licensed spectrum opportunistically. CR is rapidly proliferating into many wireless communication fields. Spectrum sensing, spectrum sharing, coexistence, spread spectrum, and MIMO techniques have become areas of concern over the past decade. More recently, many researchers are working in various application areas of cognitive radio networks (CRNs) and cognitive radio wireless sensor networks (CR-WSNs).

This special issue is mainly focused on recent advances and future direction with respect to applications of CRNs. More specifically, it is expected that the contribution of original works proposes new directions in CRNs. The submissions are intended to cover a variety of applications.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Novel applications of CRNs
• Cognitive radio for emergency and public safety applications
• Cognitive radio applications in healthcare
• Learning techniques and strategies in CRNs
• Cognitive radio in cloud computing
• Application of cognitive radio wireless sensor networks
• Performance analysis of a wireless sensor network-aided cognitive radio system
• Node mobility issue in CRNs
• Multioperator spectrum management for specific application
• Business models for opportunistic spectrum access
• Commercialization of CRNs and their applications
• Standardization of CRNs and their applications
• Regulatory aspects of CRNs and their applications
• Green cognitive radio networks

Problem with CanoScan 4200F Installation.

Today, I tried to install my old CanoScan 4200F scanner, but it did not show in Photoshop. 

However, when I installed the utility software, it worked fine from the utility software. 

Still, it is not showing in Photoshop, but there is no problem.

Strange question by students about reading scientific papers

Many students from Physical Science background ask me whether I still read scientific paper written by others. I feel this question is very strange. First of all papers are written for reading. Not for some other purpose. Yes, I read paper whenever I have time. I need to read paper to update my knowledge in the related field, to make new idea about my research and to compare my idea with others.

Bye bye Gyeongsan per-school (경산 유치원) – So many complains.

Finally, I changed my son’s school.
Yesterday, finally I took my son back to 어린이 칩 (early child education, play group). I was exhausted listening complains about my son every day by his class teachers through my wife. They complain almost every day. He is just 3 years old (born in late 2009). He used to go school at around 10 o’clock and comeback around 6. Yes, he is slightly active, but listens to the elders. He understands Korean.  

Why they used to complain? Here is the reason. According to the school principal one child who came with him after graduating from the same play group, told her mother for some unknown reason that she will not go to the same kindergarten with my son. Her mother called school and ask to the principal of the kindergarten whether my son is in the same class. Once, she knew that my son and her daughter is in the same class she took her daughter to another school. (However, when my wife called that lady for apologies, if she really took her daughter because of my son, she said, that’s not the reason at all. She said, because the number of students in the new school is less she admitted her in that school.)

After this incident, the principal and the class teachers were after my son. Complains were like, he throws toys/chopsticks, he doesn’t know how to use chopsticks, he beats other fellows or sometimes the teacher, he is depressed, and so on. Many times they suggested to give more time to him. In fact, his mother takes care of him after 6 pm to the next morning. I also take him to the playground and for outing timely.

Actually, my wife is a graduate student. She has to work in the lab. Most of the students spend their most of the time in the lab, so she also wanted to be in the lab until 6 pm. But our son’s school asked the department whether there is any class after 5 pm. Yes, officially there may not be any class after 5 pm, but she has a class until 9 pm. Some professor, they change time unofficially. The school wanted to get the stamped document from the school. They also called my son’s previous school and enquire about his behavior.

I wanted to send him in the 유치원 (pre-school) desperately because he used to say, I have already graduated the 어린이 칩 and now I wanna go to 유치원 in Korean (어린이칩 졸업했짢아, 이제 유치원 갈레).

I selected this pre-school because it’s near by my house. But, because they complained so much, finally I changed his school. Now, he is back to the 어린이 칩 again. Anyways, he is happy there. The owner/principal speaks in English, which is a great advantage to my wife. Also, she seems kind and generous. The principal’s son and daughter also study in the same 어린이 칩. They have small playground and whole building used as a 어린이 칩. New 어린이 칩’s van comes in the morning and evening. I asked whether he liked the school, he said that’s fine.

Two journals from Academic Journals are removed from the SCIE database.

Two journals from Academic Journals are removed from the ISI database. It's no more SCIE indexed journal.

Today, I checked the Thomson Reuters website. I couldn't find the two journals from in their database. One is International Journal of the Physical Sciences (IJPS) (ISSN 1992-1950) and another is Scientific Research and Essays (SRE) (ISSN 1992- 2248).
Actually, one of my friends in the Electrical Engineering Department recommended me IJPS journal. He had already several papers published in this journal. I checked this journal in the database and found it's a SCIE indexed journal. I submitted my research paper and the paper was accepted and published. Today, somebody called me and informed me that it's not a SCIE indexed. I search the database and it is true.

My bad, the paper I submitted was quite good. Unfortunately, it's not in SCIE indexed journal. Hope it'll come again.

Actually, IJPS was monthly. They started it publishing half monthly and now they publish weekly. May be the manuscript they accept are not quite good. The another reason is, they may publish it for money. Because, there is paper handling fee about $550.

A Complete Video Lecture of Numerical Analysis.

For the last several days, I was looking for the video lecture of Numerical Analysis. There are several video lectures in Youtube, however they are not complete. One is from IIT, Madras. It’s good but very complicated.
One of my friends recommended me a link. I listen to the lecture and found quiet good and impressive.
I don’t mean to complain, but the drawbacks (from my point of view) of the video lectures are the examples are repeated several times. Some, issues goes very fast and difficult to understand.
Anyways, it is a great work and professors are brilliant. I appreciated there effort to upload the lectures in Youtube. Here is the link of complete lecture.

Visio to EPS

I spent lots of time finding how to convert Visio drawing to EPS.
There are many complected ways given. Some of them do not produce good vector images.
Here is the tips for easy conversion.

1. Draw Visio figure.
2. Save as Enhanced Metafile (.emf).
3. Download Free (Open source) Metafile to EPS Converter from http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/MetafileToEPSConverter and Install.
4. Convert your .emf file.
It works perfectly for me!!

superimposing characters: How to write p-hat, n-hat, u-hat etc.

Today I was looking for a n hat, but there is no such symbol in any font. Actually I was using Ms-word 2003. I know it's old version, but many journal still request to submit article in .Doc format. Their tempeletes are in .Doc format. There might be another reason for asking in .Doc format, i.e. OpenOffice in Linux supports old .xls and .doc file. Anyways, after googling for few minutes, I found this very useful link.

Sometimes, both characters combined, so we have to raise a character by certain points. For this reason, manually typing is better than doing from menu.
Here is the tips:
Press Ctrl + F9, you can see 2 braces.
Type the following inside the braces:
EQ \o(n,^)
Select what you typed, press Shift+F9 to switch between display of field codes and field results. It's fine if it looks good. If it combines (not in the top), then press Shift+F9 again. Select ^ and go to Format>>Fonts>>Character Spacing>>Position and select Raised.
Now, if you see the field result, it looks nice.

Some useful commands for linux and simulation

Sometimes, small things takes long time to resolve. Today, I was creating cbr-traffic. Although, I have done this thing several times before, it took me 30 minutes. I forgot how I did before. I just check the readme file and tried to follow but it didn't work. I didn't check the ~/indep-utils/cmu-scen-gen/cbrgen.tcl file. Thanks, ns-miling list, I found the answer. It's because of the rate_ should be in float.

Anyways, the command should be like:
